6yo high temperature

Last night 6yo woke up with a barking cough but no stridor/temperature and was breathing fine. Today he developed a high temperature (about 39°) that is controllable with kid's nurofen. He's been quite tired and not himself but other than complaining about a few aches and coughing occasionally is otherwise okay. The cough doesn't even have that barking noise that it did last night.

I'm hoping that a good night's sleep will sort him out as he often bounces back quickly from illness but the high temperature has put me on edge. Is this just another horrible virus? I dread to ask, the horrible flu that's been going around? Croup? I'm such a worrier when it comes to my kids and temperatures!

At 39c plus responding to Calpol.
Plus with no rash, no trouble breathing, and being responsive. I really really really would not be concerned.

Sounds like a virus to me, so keep an eye on him at home for now.

Gave him nurofen before bed and his temperature went down to 36.8° by 2230 but he's just woken me up with his temperature back up at 39°, complaining of a headache. Seems his usual self otherwise. He's sniffling and coughing still so I'm presuming it's a cold virus but I'm wondering if I should give 111 a call. Why does this always happen at a weekend/during the night?

No harm in calling if it puts your mind at rest. Is he drinking plenty of fluids? You lose a fair bit through sweating and fast breathing when unwell. Hope he feels better soon.

He drank plenty during the day and I've got a water bottle with him that he's been sipping on when he wakes up. So he's hopefully had plenty of fluids.

How is he now OP? X

He's been better today. He's been himself and woke up with no temperature although he slept until 8am which is completely unlike him! his temperature was mostly normal all day until about 3ish when it got up to 38° but it's leveled out again without any ibuprofen. He's got zero appetite though.

Have you done a covid test? When one of my children had it the only symptoms they had was a temp of 39 and a headache.
