Advice please re rash…could it be Strep A?

My DD has been a bit unwell over the past few days with cold like symptoms, but of a chesty cough & complaining of a tummy ache every now & again & hasn’t much of an appetite. She’s now developed a little rash on places on her body & it does feel a little rough to touch (I’ve attached pics of rash). She doesn’t have a temperature or hasn’t complained of a sore throat - we’ve checked her throat & cannot see anything. She mixed with a few cases of strep a last week of term (finished on 16th) so wondered if this could be it coming out now?

Would like advice please? Do you think this could be strep or just a viral rash & do you think I should make a doctor appt tomorrow?

I don’t know whether it’s strep A or not, but I would still make a doctors appointment so they confirm one way or another.

It doesn't look like the scarlet fever rash, but it's hard to tell without feeling it. Scarlet fever rash is often described as like sandpaper, I think I'd say like very very tight together goosebumps when you feel it.

What's her tongue like?

From the photos it looks more like a standard viral rash, but, as I said, hard to tell. If you don't want to make a GP appointment, our local pharmacy would take a quick look.

I find the CDC guide on this much clearer than NHS and what’s been covered in the news www.cdc.gov/groupastrep/diseases-public/scarlet-fever.html

Thank you all for replying & thanks for the link @shmivorytower

@MargaretThursday I haven’t thought to look at her tongue she’s in bed now. I’ll have to check that in the morning.

I definitely think a GP or pharmacy visit is needed tomorrow though.

Looks to me like a rash related to a virus ‘coming out’ but get it checked just to be on safe side

Teaforme23 · 28/12/2022 19:29

@Tinks15 Did you find out what it is please?

Tinks15 · 28/12/2022 19:36

@Teaforme23 managed to get a GP appt for this afternoon which was good & they are treating it as possible scarlet fever although she doesn’t have all of the symptoms & have prescribed a course of antibiotics. I also mentioned (which I found out this morning) we mixed with a case of strep on Christmas Day - my brother is now really unwell with it. So they said best to cover it all & start antibiotics just in case.

@Tinks15 Thank you for replying my dd10 suddenly came down with the same rash last night. I went to speak to the pharmacist who said she doesn't think it's scarlet fever/ strep a because she doesn't have any other symptoms. I will try and get a doctor appointment tomorrow.

That's good that they've given antibiotics best to be safe, I hope both your dd and db recover quickly.

Tinks15 · 28/12/2022 20:06

Thank you @Teaforme23 oh no sorry to hear about your DD hopefully no more symptoms appear.
Good idea to get a GP appt if you can just to get her checked.

Viral rash I think. Not scarlet fever (strep A) because the sore throat (indescribably sore!) and fever are the main components

purpledalmation · 28/12/2022 20:37

I see the update. Sounds reasonable as there are so many cases and it's very transmissible so she could develop it later without the antibiotics. GPS are being super cautious with so many deaths ☹️

Chloer9210 · 28/12/2022 21:19

Anyone have any idea what this could be?

Strep A rash is dry like sand paper.

Tinks15 · 29/12/2022 18:19

So many things going around atm 😣

@Teaforme23 how’s your DD? Did you manage to get a GP appt?

@Chloer9210 I really couldn’t say. I really hope your DC is ok though.

@Tinks15 I spoke to GP on the phone, no appointments available and not classed as a emergency.

He said it's more than likely viral due to no other symptoms, just to keep check on it and if anything changes to phone out of hours.

How is your dd and db?

Bemyclementine · 29/12/2022 20:14

Ds had a headache and high temp, then the next day came out in a rash on his back snd stomach . GP said most likely viral but throat swabbed for strep A. Rash spread to neck, behind ears, face, arms and legs. Everywhere. So he was given antibiotics. He had a little bit of a sore throat, but not terrible. His swab was positive.

GettingItOutThere · 29/12/2022 22:09

hand foot and mouth?

mine have had this and the rash was everywhere! not just hands feet and mouth - legs/arms/prvates - it was awful

Tinks15 · 30/12/2022 21:42

@Teaforme23 sorry for the late reply. DD is not too bad she’s full of cold & the rash is still there but not as visible as it was. We’ve started the antibiotics now anyway so she’s covered now.

DB was quite unwell yesterday but today feels slightly better.

Hows your DD doing?
