How long does it take for Amoxicillin to work on a fever?

Just that really. My 6y/o was prescribed Amoxicillin 500mg 3x day. Just given him his 5th dose - (started them yesterday at 5pm)

He's been running a fever for the past week and yesterday after trying to get an appointment with a GP they called me back to say they'd sent an electronic prescription. His temperature is currently at 39.1 and calpol is doing very little to lower it.

So, just wondered when I can expect him to start feeling better.

About 48 hours

I think he will be feeling much better tomorrow for Christmas 😊

Takes a few days to kick in.

Thank you all. Think I need to lower my expectations of how fast it works 🤭

I used to think I could see an improvement after 24 hours and a noticeable change after 48 hours. The one time nothing had happened after 72 hours, a subsequent course of a different antibiotic was needed.

@spiderontheceiling he's been much brighter today. Not eating but drinking plenty. If it wasn't for my obsession with checking his temperature I'd think he'd definitely improved.

48 hours
5-6 doses makes a big difference
significant difference by 72 hours

Can he take ibuprofen? That's much better at reducing fever than calpol.

Hope he gets better soon.

DD's temperature started to get down after 24 hrs but only very very slowly. Only on day 3 of amoxi you could see she was clearly better.
