Tonsillitis

My little boy is on his second course of antibiotics in the last 2 weeks.

he’s on day 5 on this latest course and his tonsils still have some white bits on. He wouldn’t let us see inside his mouth the last few days so hard to compare. Should they still have white spots on them if he’s on day 5 of antibiotics? Seems ok in himself now.

What anti biotics is it?

WorriedMumZZ · 23/12/2022 21:14

@mulberrybag5 Clarithromycin. He’s just finished 10 days of Pen V too 😓

My 6 year was given that. 7 days, useless. Came back 2 weeks later and now on 10 days of penicillin. He might need a different anti biotic?

I would say that that can be ok - I sometimes have spots several days after starting antibiotics, and whilst I can see the spots, I don’t think they look very inflamed at the moment. Best indicator of whether tonsillitis is improving in your child is how well the fever and pain is responding to paracetamol and ibuprofen and whether their breath smells putrid. If both of those things are improving it’s likely ok.

all you can really do at this stage anyway is to complete the course and then wait and see.

My 6 year old still has inflamed tonsils on day 6 of penicillin but no stinky breath, no fever, absolutely fine in himself!

Complete the course and be guided by how he is. Exudate on tonsils alone is not an indicator that antibiotics are even required.

Really? I thought they were.
