DD second course of antibiotics no explanation

Long term lurker but never posted so forgive any mistakes!

Also sorry for the long read.

My DD aged 4 finished a 10 day course of antibiotics on friday for tonsillitis, she complained of a sore throat, sore stomach and had a high fever. Seemed to respond well to the antibiotics although was still complaining about a sore stomach.

Was perfectly fine all weekend!

This morning she woke up miserable with a temp of 39, complained of sore throat, sore stomach and I noticed her skin was peeling around her neck, brought her straight over to the doctors who couldn't answer any of my questions just give another 10 day course of antibiotics! I asked was it tonsillitis again, Dr said who knows.. I asked was it scarlet fever..he said he can't say if it is or isn't, all he said was her throat is red, temp is up, she has a rash and give her the antibiotics and if im worried ring back!

I feel so fobbed off, I have no medical experience but i would of thought tonsillitis would have cleared with a 10 day course of antibiotics.

Has anyone had a similar experience or have any idea what is going on!

If you've got this far thank you.

Sounds like the poor thing has recovered from tonsillitis and immediately caught scarlet fever. So the first lot of antibiotics have done their job and the new lot is to treat the new infection.

Thank you for replying, I hope this second course will sort her out, I just wish the Dr could of told me one way or the other!

So you'd rather the doctor lied?

Hope your dc gets better quickly, unfortunately when run down with one illness it is easy to pick up another. I'm not sure if there is any science behind it but I do find live yogurt/gut pills/live powder that you add to food helps when taking antibiotics but it maybe a placebo.

Obviously not? But I would rather know what it is we are actually treating than end up in the news as a fatal case with a misdiagnosis as unfortunately that is quite common these days.

Thanks for the yoghurt advice, will look into it!

The skin peels after scarlet fever my sons did... is there a chance she wasn't taking the antibiotics properly? Spitting it out?

My son is on last day of antibiotics for scarlet fever and woke up today with my cough cold!!??? Which is viral so maybe she's picked something else up?

Nonpint taking probiotics whilst taking antibiotics as they just kill all good and bad bacteria. Absolutely worth taking when her course is finished though 😀

She definitely took them but when she went back to nursery we had to stretch the doses further apart as they weren't allowed to give her them! Unless maybe because the doses were further apart she hasn't had enough in her system to fight 🤔 she has only two days left now of nursery so im keeping her off, shes not due back until after the new year.

My little boy (3) finished a 10 day course for tonsillitis on Saturday morning. Saturday evening he started with raging temps and vomiting so we were sent up to a&e where the doc said his tonsils are very swollen and he needs another/different antibiotic course xx

Worrywart94 · 19/12/2022 16:22

Ah bless him, hope he feels better soon! My DD has perked up now her fever is down thanks to ibruphen, she sounds very hoarse though! we just got the same course of antibiotics she was on last time, the doctor did write a stronger dose but the chemist said they don't stock the strength the doctor requested and it is for over 7s so not age appropriate so he give us the 125/5ml dose again

Yes! Dd who's 10 has had 2 courses of antibiotics to treat tonsillitis and she's still not well. Took her beck to GP for 3rd visit and dr said it's viral now, she's been unwell for almost a month.

Last time my DS had Scarlet Fever he needed a 2nd Antibiotic as he was becoming poorly again and his throat was covered in white spots. He wasn't actually that ill with the SF but it just didn't seem to want to shift. We were prescribed a 2nd line one as the 1st one didn't work. That sorted him out really quickly.
