Does this sound like strep a?

My 2 year old and 8 month old have been quite poorly. Took my 2 year old to hospital with a 40.1 temp after some febrile convulsions. Now he's complaining for a sore throat and his glands are up. He has a horse voice and a cough. Generally tired and wanting to just lay down. I'm going out of my mind with worry. 111 never seem to answer anymore.

What did the hospital say initially, did they not swab him? I would just go back to a and e, I wouldn’t bother waiting for 111 to answer. Or if you have an urgent treatment unit near you that sees kids you could go there. Him deteriorating and you being worried = child needs seen.

You need to seek advice from a medical professional in person not strangers online as none of us can possibly know. I hope they feel better soon.

Sameshitdifferentdayx · 11/12/2022 18:35

Hope your little ones are OK OP? X

Come on OP. This post is dangerous. Get your child seen. We can't possibly know.

Yahyahs22 · 12/12/2022 09:01

Dangerous? Bit of a reach.
Not step a. Nasty cold. If anyone comes across this with the same concerns and symptoms, a cough = not strep a. They've actually woke up much better today with no temp, just snotty.

Just a couple of points for anyone coming across this with the same symptoms

You can have a cough and strep A

its worth remembering that strep A doesn’t always - or even usually - cause severe illness, lots of people carry strep A in their throats harmlessly, and lots of other bugs do cause severe illness. So it’s all down to how the child is. A sick, drowsy, hot child needs seeing, a snotty but happy active kid doesn’t.

tiredpuppymum · 12/12/2022 10:52

@Yahyahs22 well if it wasn't before it is now!

I don't understand how you've taken a parent being genuinely concerned for their child as dangerous? I've seen more OTT posts.

Yahyahs22 · 12/12/2022 15:06

Doctor told me the fact he has a cough means it's not strep a, that's why I said that. He said to watch out for puking and a rash..but not a cough

My daughter had tonsillitis (strep a bacterial) last week. Tell tale sign is sore throat without the congestion or snotty nose. Not always true as they can have both at same time if very unlucky but generally speaking congestion = viral cold. Best way to check is to look at back of throat - strep throat is unmistakable!x

Lolacat1234 · 12/12/2022 15:12

Oh yes and my daughter was very nauseaous and complaining of achy legs x

Ah yes, a cough can be present with SA. A friend's LB had a cough with his. Though I've not heard of the puking side to it either tbh. Hope your LO is on the mend x

My eldest has it at mo (14) just started antibiotics today, after testing positive at home yesterday (I bought swabs off eBay) and then a clinician from 111 (eventually!) confirmed he met the threshold on symptoms and the pattern was what they’d expect in an older child.

  • fast onset
  • high temperature (around 39)
  • headache
  • cough
  • coated tongue
  • feels generally unwell

has sore throat starting today.

hqve a look at nhs direct and or contact your GP or 111. If you can, get hold of some strep a cassette tests so you are confident in pushing for diagnosis and antibiotics. All kids present differently and age does impact this.

Oddly a GP has literally just said the opposite to us. Toddler swabbed and treated as if Strep A and he said the cough will come.

Do the at home tests work? Is it just like a lateral flow test?
I've seen them on eBay but not sure which to get!

Sleepeazie · 15/12/2022 07:52

@behappy1736 yes. They are like covid tests.
mine are home health uk.
you collect swab, add to vial with 2 solutions and squeeze swab in there. Put 3 drops on cassette and read after 5 minutes.
