Teen DS temp not coming down after paracetamol and ibuprofen

My ds 16 has flu or something we have all had it but for some reason tonight his temp has gone up to 40 and it just wont come down it is 40.3 after the medication should have kicked in. he has had both paracetamol and ibuprofen. He is “ok” as in breathing ok etc but obviously feeling pretty rough.

if he was younger i would be in a panic but with him being 16 im not sure if i should be panicking about the temp or not!

do i just continue to monitor? And see how he is tomorrow or do i need to call put of hours?

I would ring 111 in this situation

Livinghappy · 30/11/2022 21:29

How long has he had the temperature? Hope he is drinking lots of fluids and resting.

Nancienoo · 30/11/2022 21:29

111

DoctorMartin · 30/11/2022 21:58

I would be on the alert for sepsis and would call 111

openinggambit · 30/11/2022 21:58

Have you tried other methods of bringing temp down? Sponging down with tepid water etc?

Afterfire · 30/11/2022 22:00

Ring 111. I’d be concerned about sepsis.

incognitocheeto · 30/11/2022 22:06

My kids get 40+ temps when they're ill so I'm probably more blasé about it but I'd be concerned if it's not coming down at all after ibuprofen.

I agree with calling 111 but I wouldn't be unduly worried. Keep close eye on him for signs of sepsis.

steppemum · 01/12/2022 08:33

How is he today OP?

I do think this depends on your child.
For one of mine, I'd be heading to A&E because her temp is never high.
For another of mine 40+ is normal and I wouldn't be too worried

gaf · 01/12/2022 12:44

Sponging with tepid water isn’t recommend as it causes the body to raise the temperature further, please don’t do this.

How is he in himself? Weeing, drinking?

How long ago did you give meds? Dd has been unwell with something similar this week and whereas calpol would usually kick in within 20-30 mins, the whole length of this illness it has taken 45-60 mins which is so odd!

Username917778 · 01/12/2022 12:55

My dd is much younger and we had this last week, her temp took closer to an hour to come down after the medication whereas usually its about 20 mins. It went up .5 in that time. I was in quite a bit of a flap!
