2 year old can't have flu vaccine

So I discovered last week that my 2 year old isn't eligible for the flu vaccine as he was born in September which is after the 31st August cut off date for this year. But 2 and 3 year olds are recommended to have the vaccine and he will be 3 before he has it next year. I just can't get my head round it. He goes to nursery and picks everything up as it is. And I saw an article on BBC news this morning about a 2 1/2 year old who was in hospital seriously unwell with flu and they are encouraging everyone to get their young children vaccinated. Am I missing something??

There has to be a cut off somewhere. Your child will likely be absolutely fine if they catch flu, a lot of the programme is actually to protect the wider community by reducing transmission, rather than because 2 year olds are particularly vulnerable.

You’re not missing anything. Personally I don’t understand it but there you go. If you can afford it then you can pay for it privately. I did this for my 1YO as he’s too young for the nasal spray.
