Morning everyone,, so last Friday my 4 year old got diagnosed with scarlet fever antibiotics given all was okay by the Monday but due to medication side effects I kept him off school, Thursday late evening his temp spikes again still got it this morning but I can get it down with fluids and calpol his just laying around the same as before! Antibiotics course does not finish till Sunday. Can this happen?

Sounds like he needs different antibiotics, or he’s getting a secondary infection. I’d ring 111 for advice.

Mummabear310 · 26/11/2022 07:54

Unfortunately 111 is a 20 hour wait for a call back, I will phone out of hours when the lines open, just didn’t know if this was part of it :(

He needs a longer course and it will probably need to be coamoxiclav the same happened to my daughter

Mummabear310 · 26/11/2022 09:09

Waiting for out of hours to answer now, I just want my poor boy to be well again don’t know if they will do anything as his antibiotics don’t run out till tomorrow

As @violetcuriosity says, he needs coamoxiclav, can you confirm he’s on that antibiotic (otherwise called Augmentin).

Mummabear310 · 26/11/2022 10:07

Thanks for the replies, no his almost had 10 days of erythromycin 4 x a day. Waiting for a call back his woke up this morning and seems slightly better just lethargic no temp again but rough sounding voice

Is there a walk in clinic that you can go to instead of waiting for 111? Poor baby, it’s heartbreaking when they’re so poorly. I hope he’s on the right antibiotics and on the mend soon.

spidereggs · 26/11/2022 12:35

My daughters went into tonsillitis so needed penicillin

Anewuser · 26/11/2022 14:36

@Mummabear310 any news on your little one?

Mummabear310 · 26/11/2022 19:01

out of hours werent any good! Said his most likely caught a virus on top which is causing the symptoms. Check him over and couldn’t see any problems, told me to call back Monday once antibiotics is complete got to tonight and his spiked a fever again and saying his belly hurts! :(

Mummabear310 · 27/11/2022 14:11

I’m so sorry mummabear, it’s so worrying. Keep him hydrated, check his temperature, load him up with calpol and don’t hesitate to ask for more help.

If his current antibiotics were the correct ones, they would have worked by now.

Get well soon little man.

Mummabear310 · 27/11/2022 17:44

@Anewuser thank you for your kind words, temperature stable at 37.2 for last 2 hours. He had a small amount of energy to help with Christmas tree now burnt himself out on sofa sleeping. Loading him up with fluids and ice poles his not interested in any food. Will await my gp call tomorrow.

I’m back guys!! :(
sooo the dreaded scarlet fever / strep has returned! Took little on GP on Thursday got told a viral throat infection but given antibiotics as a precaution refused to test for strep A! The symptoms are like for like but instead of a rash this time we have a cough,, dreadful throat and temp. Can you get scarlet fever again without rash?? X

Wheretheskyisblue · 18/12/2022 07:56

Is your son allergic to penicillin? This is normally the first choice one for scarlet fever.
cks.nice.org.uk/topics/scarlet-fever/management/management/

Scarlet fever without a rash is strep throat. It sounds like the first course of AB did not fully stop it.

Mummabear310 · 18/12/2022 08:04

His not allergic as such but ends up with bad side effects from it so we use an alternative. I’ve read somewhere you don’t normally get a cough with scarlet or strep ? I just want my lo better can’t believe I’m here again x

My DS's strep started with a cough, he then got the white puss and the rash followed by a swollen tongue. Did the gp see any spots on the tonsills?

Mummabear310 · 18/12/2022 12:03

There was no spots when I took him to the doctors that’s why he said viral but antibiotics as precaution. I asked doctor for a strep test but he said he didn’t believe one as he was 90% sure was viral. So in 3 days we have had 39.2 fever , headache, runny nose and cough appear since attending the doctors. He is taking the antibiotics but doesn’t seem to be improving just getting more symptoms
