11 year old boy. Woke up being sick.

constant sickness every 30 mins until around 4 o’clock. Thought it was the usual stomach bug.

about 4 o’clock got a temperature, red cheeks, pain on his right hand side (more in his back than is front)

Yes it’s painful. He can pin point the pain if that’s what you mean. It isn’t anymore painful than usual. He says he can’t walk. He’s been on the couch all day.

Honestly I would take him to A&E

Toddlerteaplease · 20/11/2022 20:15

It's Dark green coming you need to worry about. Looks like pond water. Yellow is ok.

Afterfire · 20/11/2022 20:15

I don’t mean to sound rude but your child is in so much pain they can’t walk and you’re on hold to 111? 😳 I would just go straight to A and E.

Dd10 had her appendix out three weeks ago today. After the nausea and vomiting subsided (about three hours and blood in vomit) she was left with a spot of pain lower right hand side. She could barely walk or eat, but after that nausea passed, good I think herself. This was a Friday night, we saw OOH dr who said prob a UTI. Had antibiotics. By lunch time Saturday, she was not better, but she was not worse. Couldn’t move, was in pain but could talk/chat. Took her to A&E and she was admitted for observation. It didn’t get any better and her appendix came out 24 hrs later. Inflammed but not ruptured. As it was over the weekend, I was paranoid that I was overthinking it all. She is autistic, and I wondered if perhaps her sensory issues meant she felt the pain differently. I am glad I went to get it checked out.

it is worth you checking out also.

Your instincts are right there. My daughter is on the spectrum and I am fairly certain that she felt the pain differently as a result. She is a very stoic person.

I hope your daughter is recovering well! The upside of being young is that if your child is in good health at the outset they usually bounce back very fast from even something pretty serious like this.

DrLucyVanPelt · 20/11/2022 20:21

Medic here, please take him to A&E for assessment, I would anticipate 111 giving this advice anyway. The right sided pain and being unable to walk with pain are classic appendicitis signs. Hope you get him assessed and sorted soon whatever the cause is.

MrNook · 20/11/2022 20:23

Omg why are you sat on hold to 111 when everyone is saying you should be taking him to A&E? 111 are going to send you straight there anyway and you'll have wasted all this time on hold instead of him being seen

Nat6999 · 20/11/2022 20:25

Is there any chance he could be constipated? Ds had exactly the same symptoms age 8 & it ended up being total impaction. We were sent direct from the GP to A & E, after tests they decided it was constipation & after the enema his temperature was back to normal within an hour & he was asking for McDonalds on the way home.

3ShotsOfEspresso · 20/11/2022 20:25

This all sounds exactly like when I had appendicitis I couldn’t walk either and it was such a distinct symptom. The recoil pain from pressing down on the painful area is also a specific thing - the pushing down is bad but the recoil from after the push is horrendous.

Go to A&E. He’s a kid and that is what 111 are going to tell you anyway.

Afterfire · 20/11/2022 20:26

Please do not press on his stomach. You could rupture the appendix if it’s inflamed. Only a medic should be doing things like that.

Crystaly · 20/11/2022 20:30

111 are calling me back with an OOH appointment. They said it could be a while. I asked if I should attend A&E and they advised not to since waits were so long.

Sounds like my dc.

When GP saw them they said they were doing the ‘appendix walk’. A&E said the same.

Good luck.

MrNook · 20/11/2022 20:33

You could be waiting until tomorrow for a call back, I'd take him to A&E I couldn't leave my child like that

PanicAtTheBigTesco · 20/11/2022 20:35

I would be going to A&E regardless, if there's even a chance it could be appendicitis he needs to be seen now. It sounds exactly like how mine started, I left it too long to go to hospital and it ruptured which resulted in Sepsis, another operation and a 2 week hospital stay.

Yes the minute I hobbled into A&E they said the same to me!!

Ignore 111.

If you go to out of hours and it’s appendicitis you’ll be sent to A and E anyway and have an even longer wait than you would just going there now.

thisismylittlebrotherGeorge · 20/11/2022 20:37

Waiting in a&e is surely better than waiting at home for a phone call because then at least you are in the right place if he worsens.

I couldn't leave my son like that. Get him to a&e and if you can't, then get someone who can.

theydontspeakforus · 20/11/2022 20:41

Take the boy to A&E.

alexdgr8 · 20/11/2022 20:41

don't delay.
medics and nurses on here have told you, so please,
take him straight to A&E.
now.

JanuaryParty · 20/11/2022 20:46

Op press gently where the pain is and then release.

Classic appendicitis will be more painful as you let go than when you are pressing.

Good luck hope he's better soon

Justwingingitox · 20/11/2022 21:04

I wouldn't be waiting around for 111 to call back.
Better to be safe than sorry, get him to A&E. I hope he's OK x

CornishTiger · 20/11/2022 21:14

Ignore 111. That’s A&E.

imip · 21/11/2022 07:23

Any update op?

Crystaly · 21/11/2022 10:14

Yes was seen by OOH doctor at 2am. By then he perked up a lot. Told that they were confident it wasn’t his appendix as pain wasn’t in the right place and no pain when pressed and released.

Crystaly · 21/11/2022 11:09

He has started being sick again. Pain is no longer in the right hand side. More general pain all over stomach
