11 year old boy. Woke up being sick.

constant sickness every 30 mins until around 4 o’clock. Thought it was the usual stomach bug.

about 4 o’clock got a temperature, red cheeks, pain on his right hand side (more in his back than is front)

Have you rang 111

Crystaly · 20/11/2022 19:24

Not yet. I don’t want to waste a trip to OOH when it’s most likely a bug. The only thing putting me off is the right hand side pain.

It does yes but could be other things too. As PP said, ring 111 for advice on getting him seen. Sounds like it needs checking out x

Crystaly · 20/11/2022 19:37

Calling now. It’s a 30 minute wait just to speak to them.

How far is A&E, I would be tempted to take him there tbh

Same.

Classic symptoms of appendicitis.

Crystaly · 20/11/2022 19:47

A&e isn’t far but last time I went with him for a sore ankle after a fall at football we waited for 6 hours

They are the exact symptoms my sister had when she had appendicitis. She was sick for about 3 days and it was dismissed as a sick bug to start with.

Crystaly · 20/11/2022 19:48

It’s the pain being in the back rather than the front that makes me think it might not be.

But if his appendix ruptured he'd be in the best place!

Hopefully triage would have him ranked higher than a sprained ankle that needs checking.

No green vomit I hope?

BabyST · 20/11/2022 19:53

Has he any pain when passing urine? When last did he have a poo and was his poo normal?

If you press on his right lower abdomen and leave go does that pain get worse? If so it indicated possible appendix

BabyST · 20/11/2022 19:54

It could also be a kidney infection. Either way you’re there if your concerned take him to A&E regardless of the wait.

Crystaly · 20/11/2022 19:55

He had bright green vomit. And yellow. Why?

Same symptoms I had when heavily pregnant with DD. Dismissed by labour ward as gastroenteritis, told her I was worried it was appendicitis- I'm also a nurse. Sent home and still couldn't keep anything down and the pain got worse, back in and after an MRI was taken straight to theatre as it had started to rupture. I was very lucky, as was DD.

Take him in.

Exactly the same as well. I couldn't keep a thing down. It's bile and acid.

bloodywhitecat · 20/11/2022 19:57

Green or yellow/green vomit needs A&E

RandomMess · 20/11/2022 19:59

Because green = infection not necessarily bile

Crystaly · 20/11/2022 20:00

It was bright green, then yellow then pure water for the last few hours. I’ll mention that to 111. Still on hold and been for 20 mins so hopefully speak to someone soon.

Take him in asap. My daughter had low level tummy pain and some sickness for a period, at a time when there was a bug going round the school, so we thought it was just that. Then she became really unwell and the pain moved from a vague pain in the centre of the tummy to the right side. We got an ambulance and went to A&E where they confirmed it was appendicitis. By the time she was operated on her appendix had ruptured. Took a long time to get on top of the resulting infection. Better safe than sorry.

Because he’s really quite poorly OP and should be seen by seen by a medical professional. Today

VladmirsPoutine · 20/11/2022 20:02

I have no advice other than to have called 111 which you're already doing but I hope your boy is on the mend soon!

Dd10 had her appendix out three weeks ago today. After the nausea and vomiting subsided (about three hours and blood in vomit) she was left with a spot of pain lower right hand side. She could barely walk or eat, but after that nausea passed, good I think herself. This was a Friday night, we saw OOH dr who said prob a UTI. Had antibiotics. By lunch time Saturday, she was not better, but she was not worse. Couldn’t move, was in pain but could talk/chat. Took her to A&E and she was admitted for observation. It didn’t get any better and her appendix came out 24 hrs later. Inflammed but not ruptured. As it was over the weekend, I was paranoid that I was overthinking it all. She is autistic, and I wondered if perhaps her sensory issues meant she felt the pain differently. I am glad I went to get it checked out.

it is worth you checking out also.

Have you tried putting any pressure on his low right hand side to see if it's painful for him?
