Help! Hand, foot & mouth advice

Hi all!
my 21 month old girl came down with HFM yesterday morning, woke up with a rash around her mouth after a broken nights sleep. It’s now progressed since then, no sleep at all last night as she was so upset; temperature, itchy hands and feet and she must have a lot going on inside her mouth as it’s really hurting her to eat and she keeps trying to scratch her tongue and crying when she does.
Her face rash is looking pretty bad and I’m sure her constant dribbling isn’t helping. I’m getting conflicting advice from people/google about putting creams on it and wondering if anyone’s been advised by a paediatrician as to what’s best?

praying for a better night tonight and a fast recovery. It’s awful seeing her like this and also the sleepless nights and the fact that I’m pregnant isn’t great either!

how long has it lasted for others?

It's horrible, but that looks pretty normal for the virus. It's just a case of getting through it really. Calpol. Warm baths. Cuddles.

3 days for the worst to be over. About 2.5 weeks for the rash and spots to completely disappear

Omg! I caught it from my toddler and thought I was better from the awful fever sore throat but now have the rash on my hands! When will it end?! I have a newborn at home too!Confused

Ice lollies to keep her hydrated, and lots of cuddles

@laura786 or anyone- is it still contagious during the 2.5 week wait for the rash to go? Not sure if I'm being overly cautious with a friends DD who was diagnosed last week

laura786 · 26/11/2022 20:23

I don't think so.

It was a long time ago (mine is nearly 6 now and had it at 9 months), but I remember we resumed our playgroup the week after and didn't set of a chain reaction of cases

Ice lollies and anbesol / bonjella in her mouth on the sores including the roof of her mouth. We also put calamine cream on for the itching on hands/feet/nappy area x

I would try to keep the mouth area as dry as possible and then put some Vaseline on it as a barrier against the drooling rather than a cream/moisturiser.
Virasoothe gel for the itching is wonderful, I used it for my son's chicken pox and also for hives on myself and it really does help relieve the itching.
Ice lollies to soothe her mouth and calpol/nurofen for the pain and fever.
