Child joint pains

Hello,

Just looking to see if anyone has been through similar with their children. Around 8 weeks ago my 7 year old daughter started complaining of left knee pain in mornings only. She's a gymnast so I just put it down to maybe being achy from that however recently struggles to walk down stairs and limping in the mornings only. Joint feels warm to touch and is puffy first thing also.

Spoke with gp on Monday who gave me a number for children's physio after speaking with them their words were "we don't like it if a child has joint pains and swelling in the morning so we will see her asap" so of course my mind is worrying whilst waiting on this appointment. Has anyone been through similar and know what it could be?

I have attached photos of knee in morning and evening .

Thank you

One of my sons has this when they were around 11. He would have random times of pain around the back of the knee and swelling just under the knee. I have tried to look at the pictures well. Is she sitting or laying when taken? What is she like when standing up? Is there anywhere else swollen? Ankles? Any pain her hips?

My thinking is it could be OSD - osgood-schlatters-disease potentially and is really common as far as I know.

Have you been giving her any Calpol or anything like that?

I used to have a lot of joint pains as a kid which were passed off as growing pains. Puberty was tough. It took till I was 40 to be diagnosed with joint hypermobility syndrome (hEdS). I was really good at gymnastics because of it, but it wasn’t necessarily helpful.

Hi. @BabyST

She been having regular Calpo and ibuprofen to help with the pain i have to wake her up 45 mins before shes due ti grt up to give her some to make it more bearable to get out of bed. She does complain of sore ankles at times too but no swelling etc in them areas. She is sitting in these photos.

@Ks1994 Has this come all of a sudden has she injured her knee in any way? How bad is the pain out of 10? When she stands up what way do her feet point? Are they in line with each other? Id be interested to know what she is like and looks like standing up with her feet point. This could suggest it could be something out of sorts with her hips and putting pressure on her knee

@BabyST She's rating the pain an 8 when asked. Feet are pointing all in right direction and hips is ok when gp checked it out last week. Came on randomly no known injury that she can recall and started in summer holidays when she wasn't doing gymnastics.

Hmm sounds very odd. Did the GP suggest what it could be?

Sisisimone · 09/10/2022 17:53

Is she hypermobile? My dd had similar joint pain on exercise and was eventually dagnosed with Ehlers Danlos syndrome

Gp didn't say anything but did want to take bloods however said she'd rather hold of if she's being referred elsewhere so not having to do it twice
