Hi everyone wondering if anyone can give me any advice im constantly worrying aboit my lad he has always suffered with tonsillitis since 6 months he is currently on the list for them out but he ends up so poorly in June for strep pneumonia after being told for 2 weeks it was viral he ended up on IV antibiotics in hospital since I wont let them par me off so easily we ended up in a&e 12days ago again with tonsils left with 10day course of penicillin.. completing the course and he was better the day after he finished it its come straight back been to my GP who has now given me another 10day course (she didn't want to) I had to say last time pneumonia happened and I am not risking it so she gave me the same penicillin for another 10days.... since being home today he has had 1 dose and now seems so much better yet again so they must work my question is why did it come back after completing the course and will keep taking these end up making him immune to them .. my other worry is we go away in 3 weeks to Mexico so I'm very anxious about this not clearing up but the doctor has given me some antibiotics to tske as a precaution any help is much appreciated stressed out mum alert😭😭

No advice here but I do remember as a teenager I had tonsillitis for over a year and a half and was permanently on antibiotics until I had them out. Keep pushing as you might be entitled to move up the queue quicker. Personally I would be considering cancelling/postponing the Mexico trip, tonsillitis can make you feel very very ill and he's only 5 Sad Hope these antibiotics work better

Yes they have sent a letter to expedite them ASAP I know what you are saying about postponing it but this is the first time he's had antibiotics back to back and usually it clears up I am going to see how he is after this course and obviously if he needs IV or it comes bsck we won't be going anywhere I just feel very stuck with it all he should of had these out a long time ago been very let down hope someone can help me with a similar experience my worst worry is it coming back after this second course and where it would take us the doctor told me she doesn't no so reassuring 😑

Did anyone test to see if this actually a tonsillitis caused by bacteria? If it isn't then antibiotics won't help.

  • you can't tell by looking
  • most sore throats are not caused by bacteria
  • Even if this is a young child, with pus seen on the tonsils, swollen neck glands, and a fever, only about 50:50 it is a bacteria causing the problem
  • A cough makes it even less likely it is a bacteria causing the problem

There are two tests to tell if there are bacteria present:

  • take a swab and send it to the lab for culture
  • a "rapid antigen test" (a bit like a home Covid test, gives immediate results)
