When to call a doctor about cough

My son is 2 and has had a cold for 6/7 days. He was bad then improved then got worse again. For the last 3 nights he's been up a number of times coughing and being sick. Although not really sick, its phelm. He seems generally OK in himself in the daytime. Although snotty and a bit grumpy. He's just not seeming to improve though. Should I leave it or call the doctor just in case?

It's strange well I was going to say funny but not in a laughing way of course, that my DS also has this thing of bringing up phlegm when he's got a bad cold/poorly. He's been doing it since he was a baby and the doctor told me it was normal 🤷🏻‍♀️ I never considered it like vomiting but I guess it could be compared to that.
I would say if your little one is still not better and seems to have got worse, then call your surgery and speak to them.

Does he have a fever or anything? Eating and drinking ok??
If he's ok in the day time and coughing phlegm up on a night time it's probably post nasal drip going down the back of his throat making him cough when he's lying down. Viruses can linger for a while.
