How much should Calpol/ Ibuprofen bring a temp down...

If a child's temp is 39/38 etc should Calpol/ Ibuprofen be taking it back down all the way to 36 or is 37 reasonable? This is Calpol vs Ibuprofen at staggered times, not both given together at the same time.

In my experience bringing down to 37 is normal. Also I've found that it can sometimes take a couple of hours to kick in fully.

If it reduces it at all then it's doing its job.

If the temp continues rising despite calpol then you should take child to GP, or possibly A&E if they are very little.

My middle boy is very prone to high temps, if it's about 38c I'm happy when it's down to 37

He had had a few 40c temps in which case I'm happy when it gets down to 38

Thank you all. Confirmed what my rational brain was thinking! She is 19 months and suffers with ongoing UTIs due to kidney issues. Temp was 39 on Sunday and came down to 37.8 and been rising back up to about 38.1 and going down to between 36.8-37.5 so that's good. She's now on antibiotics so hoping to see these kick in asap!
