Hi, I'm just after a bit of general advice, on whether I should be concerned. My 11 month old developed a fever Sunday night. By Monday afternoon he began throwing up. This has continued on and off to today with now loose nappies as well. We've guessed it's probably a stomach bug as he already attends nursery. However the fever and vomiting have shown no signs of slowing down and he has been sleeping pretty much on and off for the past few days.

Luckily he's been able to breastfeed but then he falls back to sleep immediately afterwards. No interest in toys or anything around him. I took him to the doctors yesterday who couldn't find anything wrong except for a fever of 40 and suggested it was probably gastroenteritis or 'something viral'. I've been trying to keep his fever down with calpol and ibuprofen but it still comes back up. I'd have thought those are 24 hour things and generally babies bounce back fairly quickly from stomach bugs or so I thought.

Obviously if he continues being unwell I will call back the gp again tomorrow. I just wondered if anyone had any experience or advice in the meantime that could ease my mind?

I should also add he's been heavily congested with a cold /cough but doctors found nothing wrong with his chest.

2 months ago I got the most awful norovirus. Exact same symptoms. I was in bed for a whole week. Literally couldn’t move. It will take a good week to clear up.

My DS had an awful bug a few months ago when he was 10 months old. He had bronchiolitis then straight into a sickness and diarrhoea bug. Barely ate anything solid for 10 days - just breastfed. Several 111 calls and a GP check up but it was viral and did eventually pass.

Things to monitor-

wet nappies?

alertness when he does wake - is he feeding normally?

If he isn’t weeing or seems floppy then seek medical advice asap.

Hopefully he just has a viral bug and he will improve. I went back to using the sling for my DS so he could sleep on me all day!

Thank you both for your replies. I guess it's just a really bad bug. He's still feverish and sleeping a lot. He's fed up of seeing the syringes of calpol and nurofen come he's way that it's harder trying to get medicine down him. But there's been a bit of improvement in his behaviour so hopefully we're over the worst of it. Just didn't expect him to be so lethargic.
