I posted a couple of months ago following dd’s routine cardio appointment regarding her small vsd and got some helpful responses thank you.
She has now been placed on a waiting list for open heart surgery.
I have been googling a LOT and most info, certainly experiential, is about infants. I can’t find much about young children undergoing ohs.
Does anyone have any experience they can share?
She has a small vsd to close, a leaky aortic valve and an enlarged ventricle.
The waiting list is approx 6 months and she will be at Leeds General Infirmary.
I am ok with the surgery, low risk and necessary. But I am so worried about the impact on her. She is very behind at school already and this is likely to mean
at least 6 weeks off, and she is quite an anxious little girl.
Any experience or advice would be so appreciated, thank you.

She was much younger, nearly 3, but my DD had surgery to close her VSD and still has a very minor leaky valve. It was scary for us but by day 4 she was literally running up and down the ward and was discharged that day. We kept her off nursery for a month but she could have gone back sooner.
I hope it all goes smoothly.
