Why only London?

Because that's where they've found polio in the water.

carefullycourageous · 10/08/2022 12:34

Sad public health is a mess at the moment

Dalint · 10/08/2022 12:35

Sewage in the following areas has tested positive. SEWAGE, not humans.

Barnet, Brent, Camden, Enfield, Hackney, Haringey, Islington and Waltham Forest, UKHSA said.

I thought polio was transmissible human to human? Is it safe to only vaccinate Londoners?

Dalint · 10/08/2022 12:38

One of my neighbours many years ago had one leg shorter than the other and apparently he had contracted polio as a child. This is kind of worrying? I actually thought that it was eliminated? Do they vaccinate for it still?

In the current circs I would start with a programme in London, since presumably it hasn't been found in any other city yet. Obvs there is some transmission risk to people visiting London but living elsewhere (or if the infected visit them outside London) but no evidence of a need for vaccinations - yet.

If you’ve been vaccinated as part of the normal vaccine cycle you’re fully vaccinated against polio anyway.

Neverendingdust · 10/08/2022 12:43

Interestingly there’s signs it’s in New York also.

Monkeypox, Polio, Covid, WW3, incompetent government, incoming Blackouts, rising prices.

What next.

Dalint · 10/08/2022 12:43

I have signed up to receive various gov.uk newsletters.
One of them is this "Weekly Statutory Notification of Infectious Diseases (NOIDs) Report"
It's useful, unless you're a hypochondriac. 😂

Are we all vaccinated? I only remember my children getting the mumps, measles, rubella, meningitis ones. Can't recall them being vaccinated against polio? I also have no idea whatsoever what I have been vaccinated against apart from Rubella and Tuberculosis. Obviously, Covid more recently.

OP posts:
Dalint · 10/08/2022 12:48

I know that as a child, we were not vaccinated against mumps or measles as I had measles as a child and my brother had mumps as an adult.

I think it's a brilliant and proportionate response. Can obviously mobilise to go wider if needs be, but essentially that's where it's been found in the sewage, it's not transmitting massively in the population yet so get the DCs vaccinated.

I just hope there's a good take-up after all the Covid anti-vax chat.

Yes. Nobody in London has polio. It's in the sewage, so likely from people who have been live vaccinated then traveled to the uk. This isn't another 'covid'

3amAndImStillAwake · 10/08/2022 12:52

All children are vaccinated against polio as part of the standard NHS vaccination schedule. It's part of the 6-in-1 jab given at 8, 12 and 16 weeks. They then get vaccinated against it again in their 3 year 4 month boosters, and their teenage boosters.
(I have a 12 week old and a 3 year old so I'm more aware of what they're given than I'd normally be)

But the news today is that even children fully vaccinated as per the NHS schedule will be offered an additional booster.

Why bother vaccinating?

Why boost them?

Do you think they shouldn't?

I know.

ColdHappyBap · 10/08/2022 12:54

It’s not unusual to target vaccines like this. They do it with BCG, certain areas they give it to newborns because of the increased TB in those areas. But it’s not routinely on the vaccination schedule.

Sirzy · 10/08/2022 12:54

It’s a booster for the group that would be most at risk if it did become a risk again. Polio is in the normal vaccine schedule here so a large majority of people will already be fully vaccinated this is just an extra sensible precautionary measure

Polio is part of the 6-in-1 you get at 8, 12 and 16 weeks so babies are still vaccinated. DD is only 11m though so not sure about later jabs!

Dalint · 10/08/2022 12:55

But if children are already vaccinated, why vaccinate again?

Why boost them?

Extra precaution to reduce the risk further.

prevention is better than cure

I know.

Why bother vaccinating in the first place if now they think it needs to be boosted?

Polio is in with the diphtheria, whooping cough etc dtap. Or used to be given as drops but that was before my time (just) and I'm 42
