Campylobacter infection for months antibiotics not working

13 year old late diagnosis of campylobacter from stool sample after he has been unwell with diarrhea for about eight weeks.

Clarithromycin prescribed but no improvement and from reading they only work if prescribed in the first few days.

Repeating stool sample but does anyone have any experience or thoughts on what I should be asking for to help him?

As in a different antibiotic or should we do a break on dairy?

I had this a few years ago. The problem is the bug causes inflammation in the bowel that can take months to settle down. I’m not sure taking more antibiotics is the answer as I suspect what he’s suffering from now is the post infection inflammation. More antibiotics may just kill more good bowel flora.
I took probiotics (although now prebiotics are available). Eventually it got better. Look up how to improve gut health and encouraging good bacteria in the bowel.

I never had antibiotics, I just waited it out. It’s notifiable, have environmental health been in touch? I think probiotics would be good. You can have many clear stop samples and then test positive. It’s a nightmare.

Thank you both especially after saying you waited it out I felt awful when I finally got a Dr appointment.

Yes environmental health had been in touch but we can't remember what we did back in May, I remember him being sick but thought it was just just regular bug.

We are coming up for three months since infection, they are going to test to see if it is still there, will increase the probiotics.

Thanks for letting me know it dragged on, just started to worry that he hadn't cleared it naturally.

Does anyone know if the live capsules from places like Holland and Barrett are worth the money?

Another vote for probiotics. The capsules are way better than the yoghurt drinks.

CloudSkyFly · 29/07/2022 22:02

Thank you! have now ordered some capsules.

I agree it is the residual inflammation. Add probiotics and look into a clean no-processed food diet, preferably grain and dairy free. This sorted out my daughter after months of immense stomach pain without any explanation.

By the way we used Enterogermina probiotics. They are quite effective. Homemade yoghurt.

When I had campylobacter years ago the doctor gave me a homeopathic medicine called something like Arsen alb . I had to not touch the tablets just take them out of the lid . They worked very well.

I had a course of metronidazole followed by a dose of Azithromycin and it seemed to sort it out but the after effects of campylobacter are terrible, it lasts for ages
