Lansoprazole for 12 week old baby

Hi,

My son was diagnosed with acid reflux at 3 weeks old. He started on gaviscon which made him constipated. We then moved to the liquid solution of omeprazole along with cutting out dairy, soya and caffeine from my diet as he's breastfed. We have been monitoring his weight so that the meds are increased accordingly.

We have seen a bit of an improvement but not as much as we would have expected. I mean he doesn't spend 6 hours a night crying anymore but he's still pretty upset. He's having three to four bouts of being inconsolable so not after everyfeed but most of them.

The GP was going to refer him to a consultant but as he's putting on weight we'll we wouldn't be seen for quite a while. With this in mind we took him to see a private doctor who specialises in this area. He checked for tongue tie which there isn't one. He advised to change to lansoprazole and that the dietary changes were pointless as this isn't an intolerance to certains foods in my sons case.

We have switched medication and this is the second day. I haven't changed my diet back as I don't want to change too much at once. Problem is my son seems worse than he did on the omeprazole. Can anyone advise if this is usual when switching drugs and how long it took for the lansoprazole to make a difference?

The specialist said he believed we would see a different baby by two weeks time.

Thanks

how is your little one getting on now on the loranzapole? My LG is on loranzapole and we seem to be having some issues with sickness still after uping the dosage. Trying to find some more info on this is a nightmare

Hi @Hhh300706 Sorry it took me a while to respond it's been a busy week. So my little guy has responded very well to the lansoprazole. He's had the dosage upped as per the specialists recommendation a few times and it doesn't seem to have made him throw up. When is your baby having it? They recommend the morning which is what we have been doing. We try to keep him still and don't really so much vigorous playing for the hour after that to keep the medicine down.

He still gets sick but isn't upset about it he just throws up then carries on with what ever he's up to. I think the whole point of the medicine is to reduce the stomach acid so it stops hurting them it won't stop them throwing up as the muscle needs to strengthen which will only take time. Is she upset with it? I would maybe go back to the doctor and speak to them about it if you're concerned or its affecting her weight.

Hope you get sorted xxx

Hiya! Thankyou for your reply, I’m not 100% sure why she got put on it in the first place because she never suffered with been sick. I have taken her off the meds since Monday. I literally think everything is trial and error. She’s been perfectly fine and hardly been sick at all! I’m so glad Iv trailed her with out it. She’s been very dribbly but she’s just cut her first tooth at 15 weeks old 🥰 x

Hi all,
can anyone recommend how to administer lansoprazole effectively?

My 5 week old daughter has been prescribed 1/4 of 15mg lansoprazole (fastab) to be dissolved in 5ml of water and administered via syringe. Problem is the tablet doesn't actually dissolve (say how a paracetamol would), it turns into microbeads which then get stuck in the syringe or dribble out of her mouth. It's so concerning as she's not getting a full dose and is still in pain and I feel awful. Any advice welcomed!

Thanks
