How often should I be using steroid for eczema?

My son is nearly two and has had patches of eczema since he was a baby.

We were prescribed hydrocortisone cream then eumovate and now elocon.

The gp told me to use it whenever he had a flare up and can use it for as long as needed even though only 7 days is recommended.

However I feel like I'm having to use it so much more frequently for his flare ups. Maybe twice a month for the full 7 days.

Elocon is a potent steroid so I don't want to use it anymore than I need to.

Does anyone have any advice or any other remedies to try?

The patches are behind his knees, thighs and in the crease if his elbows mainly.
