Heat exhaustion or bug?

DD 3 went to nursery today, the only time she was outdoors was 8am and 3.30pm for 5 minutes each time being carried there and back by DP. Nursery has air con but it’s inefficient; they kept the kids inside all day. She came home, seemed fine - was crawling around being a cat - had an ice lolly, then spontaneously fell asleep on the floor. She’s just woken up crying and complaining of a headache with a temp of 38. Feels like a furnace. Gave calpol and she’s back asleep now.

Is there any way of knowing whether this is heat exhaustion or a bug? She slept downstairs last night as her bedroom has been hot, 28 degrees. She had an hour or two outside yesterday but in full shade in the paddling pool. We were out a bit on Saturday too but shade as much as pos. Always a hat and factor 50.

Feel like my own brain is melting and can’t think what to do other than keep her downstairs and keep an eye on her.

It's ticking a fair few heat exhaustion boxes. Can you try to cool her?

I'm having the exact same worry with my 2.4 year old at the moment! Yesterday she became very sleepy and had a nap (unusual) then wouldn't really eat much at all for the rest of the day - also unheard of! Her temp was fluctuating between 37-38.5. She slept all night but when I went in to get her this morning she was flushed and 38.4 again. Have been giving calpol and ibuprofen today and temp has gone back to normal. No other symptoms apart from extreme grumpiness. It's a worry not knowing whether there's a bug/other cause! She's not eaten a lot at all today. Worried about the bedroom temp tonight which is over 30... Trying to cool with an air con unit but it's not that effective!

I’ve got a cool flannel on her, and her temp is coming down with Calpol. She’s asleep in just a nappy but even our coolest room where she is is pretty hot.

It’s so hard playing the “heat, Covid or regular old nursery bug” bingo to know what to do.

@Caneloalvarez Do you have a downstairs you can relocate her to? I’d say grumpiness is a good sign generally, vs confusion/disorientation.

@stuntbubbles I agree it's horrible not knowing the cause! She's such a stubborn little thing and so used to her routine that there's no way she would sleep downstairs lol. She's in her usual room and fallen straight to sleep but I'm just worried about the temp.. it's 29 in there 😔 part of me thinks it can't be the heat? My friends toddlers don't have this reaction in the heat.. it doesn't seem common? I guess all we can do is wait and see! She's not at nursery yet but she will probably be going in sept and I'm dreading the nursery bugs being added to the list of worries 😅 I hope your dd feels much better tomorrow!
