DD (4) will only poo in nappy at night

Hello, wondering if anyone else has experienced this and how you solved it. My just turned 4 year old daughter will only do a poo at night in her nappy when she's asleep. She has pooed on the toilet 3 times but only because she was absolutely desperate and it causes some degree of distress before it happens but she's pretty pleased with herself when she's done.

We spoke to the Dr and followed the advice to up her fruit and veg intake and get her drinking plenty of water. We also sit her on the loo after her bath and read her a story. She's happy to sit on the loo but doesn't go. We have been trying not to draw attention to it and let her get there in her own time but it doesn't seem to be working.

She has been dry during the day for a couple of years and we have no reason to believe she has any additional needs. It's a habit she's trained herself into because she doesn't like having a poo.

Anyone else had this and got any suggestions that might help? Thanks

Pooing in a nappy is a very different feeling to pooing in the toilet and a lot of kids find it scary and resist.

Id start with bribery and lots of praise when she does do it.

It is possible that she could get ‘bunged up’ with poo inside her which makes it painful for her to go. In that case there is medicine which you can get which coats the anal passage with oil to prevent the pain. Once the excess poo comes out then they are generally much happier and willing to use the toilet. So keep an eye on her and return to the GP if things don’t improve.
