Tonsillitis under 2

Hi everyone,
Was at gp today and told my little girl who is nearly 2, has tonsillitis. Tonsils inflamed, high temp etc. Looking online it seems tonsillitis is more common after age of 5. Anyone any experience with a one or two year old having tonsilitis? Thanks!

Yes sadly plenty. Ds1 had his first severe ( needed ivabs) bout at 15m and had awful recurring episodes until he was 7. No idea what changed after 7, but he’s 12 now and hasn’t had it since.

My DS had it a few months back… had 2 back to back by ear infections which led to the tonsillitis (and a third ear infection) out of hours GP trip at the weekend and 10 days of antibiotics did the trick!

Thanks so much for the replies. Alreadysalty - is your DS quite young also? Just wondering did your children have white spots on the tonsils? Thanks again! ☺️

He will be 2 in a few weeks! Yes to the white spots, he was also sick quite a lot with it too.

My eldest had it at 18 months old, she is 24 now and not had it since.

DS had recurring bouts of tonsillitis so had his taken out before he was 3.

DD also constantly suffers but ENT won't even entertain the idea of doing anything until she is at least 3. Hmm

bbqhulahoop · 18/05/2022 22:09

Yep. And we get hospitalised every time as no GP san ever spot it 😬 it's so rubbish, sorry OP

DeliaOwens · 18/05/2022 22:16

Yes, DD had 18 antibiotics in 12 months between 14 months and 2+, and tonsils were taken out (along with adenoids) shortly after. She has been marvellous ever since, best decision.

bananainpjs · 18/05/2022 22:42

Yes, my 3 year old has had 5 bouts so is having them removed in June along with his adenoids. I had mine removed at 4 for the same reasons.

My DD used to get tonsillitis every six months or so from about a year old, she's now 6 and a half and hasn't had it it 2 years despite getting seemingly everything else this winter.

Thanks so much everyone for the replies, great to hear other's experiences. My Dad's main symptoms are a high temp, a bit off her food and putting her hands in her mouth a lot. She's in good form otherwise. Any similar experiences? Hope the temp breaks soon!!
