What's this rash?!

DD is 16 months and for the last few days has had a mystery red spotty rash. It started on her torso and has spread outwards. It's now on her legs, upper arms and a little bit on her face. It's worst on her lower back. It doesn't seem to be itchy. It's slightly raised in places. She's eating and drinking fine and hasn't had a temperature. Her sleep has been a bit disturbed since this rash appeared and she's been a bit clingier and more irritable than usual. Still playing and moving around happily most of the time though.

We called 111 this morning hoping to get an OOH appt but had a phone consultation with a nurse instead (she also had a quick look via video) and she didn't think it was worth an appointment. She didn't really know what it could be, just 'one of those things'. She suggested seeing a pharmacist if we wanted someone to look at her in person. I took her to the pharmacist who only had the briefest look from across the counter and said it could be a hayfever type thing or viral. She didn't seem concerned.

I'm not too worried about it as the professionals aren't and she's eating and drinking, but she's not herself and I would like to know what it is. It's slightly concerning to see it still spreading and showing no signs of easing off.

Does anyone have any ideas what it could be? Anyone had anything similar? I've added a picture - not a particularly good one but gives an idea at least.

Eczema or heat rash would be my guess.

Lem0nDrizzle · 23/04/2022 18:51

Any change in laundry stuff?
Ate anything different?
New bath wash?

Fernsinthegarden · 23/04/2022 18:52

I’d say heat rash if it’s not bothering her and you haven’t made any recent changes in diet, laundry etc.

I did wonder about heat rash as I think she got a bit overheated at night just before it started. Would heat rash last for days though?

We stayed at my sister's over the weekend and she washed some clothes so I did consider that but it was quite a few days ago now so again not sure it would last so long? Also tried some new baby shampoo but again the timings aren't quite right. I mentioned both to the 111 nurse and she didn't think it looked like a reaction to either.

Have you given her some antihistamine?

Fernsinthegarden · 23/04/2022 18:59

I’d try an antihistamine as per pp but what about diet? Any changes there?

3ormorecharacters · 23/04/2022 18:59

No haven't tried antihistamines, I think we would need a Dr to give it the ok as they're not recommended for under 2s.

No changes in diet

Antihistamine seems an obvious first step to rule allergy in or out. Allergies can start at any time even with products that have previously been fine.

Thanks, I'll try and get hold of some asap!

That looks like the viral-illness rash my children used to get when they were under the weather.

Try an antihistamine and you could try some calamine lotion, but if she's not bothered by it, I wouldn't mess about with awkward creams.

Keep an eye on her, she's likely sickening for something (well, that's what I'd think if that was on one of my kids, and I'm not a doctor!).

3ormorecharacters · 23/04/2022 19:51

Some kind of generic viral thing is my main suspicion. Interesting that yours get it before coming down with something, will keep an eye out. Or is there such a thing as post viral rash? We all had Covid about a month ago.

I’ve heard of post viral rashes so could be! As you say, I’d only be really worried if there’s anything else accompanying it, keep everything the same for a bit (no new foods, washing powder etc) and if it doesn’t change give the GP another call

My DD had something very similar, although she initially had a temp and vomited. Then a day later she started developing the exact same rash that slowly spread over her body. It wasn’t itchy and didn’t seem to bother her. But she was very irritable and clingy for a few days. It was roseola, common childhood virus.

3ormorecharacters · 23/04/2022 20:13

Roseola seems a good match. Maybe I just missed the temperature.
