Awful urticaria / hives & high temp 5yo

Has anyone experienced hives that continue to get worse after piriton wears off? My 5yo had randomly got a bad case of urticaria after we'd spent the day at gullivers theme park. It continued to get worse at home so gave piriton, which seemed to help a bit with the itching initially but didn't particularly help clear the hives. I took her to urgent care who just said to keep giving piriton and keep her cool as heat makes it worse.
Then during the night she had a temperature and the hives were spreading and getting worse, she was covered in huge areas of raised red skin rather than little spots, so I called 111 who said basically the same thing as urgent care and said that urticaria can come and go even with piriton. Finally managed to get paracetamol in her at 5am and she is brighter now but she had a rough night the rash is still there, maybe not quite as bad but still pretty bad, and still very itchy. It seems to be fading in some places then coming up in others. I'm still giving piriton.
I've no idea if it's an allergic reaction or viral. We've done a covid test but it's negative, although it's difficult to get a decent swab off her.
I've never seen hives/urticaria like this before, is this common? We're booked in to the gp later for a full check over but keen to hear others experiences as both my girls have had allergic reactions before but nothing like this.
Can't upload a photo for some reason but will try again in a bit.

I've had pretty extensive rashes with allergies - particularly with sunscreen, but I've never had a temperature with it. That would suggest illness to me.

@Seeline thank you, yes I was thinking viral. Gp said it's impossible to say but as it doesn't look like her previous allergy responses it may well be viral. Have managed to attach a photo of her thigh/side of torso. It's like this in big patches all over legs and arms mainly now.

Oh poor little thing - that must be so itchy and uncomfortable! Hope the antihistamines continue to help.

My DS gets the same sometimes with a virus. Happened very recently in fact. The Piriton helped with the itch though the rash stayed. It took nearly a week and then disappeared overnight.

I don't suppose you used Nivea sun cream on her did you?

I've just discovered Nivea have re-formulated their kids Protect & Care range and added almond oil to it. It used to be safe for us so I sent mine to school with it today and just seen the warnings on an allergy FB group.

@CircesLion no not used nivea suncream.

@ShowOfHands piriton seems to work only for the itch and doesn't seem to last very long. Dr has prescribed citirizine instead so we will see how that goes.
