Hi there,

My son is 3 (4 in June) and has been having bouts of illness since 06 March when he was diagnosed with tonsillitis. He finished his antibiotics then two days later he developed another fever with an awful cough (not covid). More antibiotics incase a sinus infection. Finished those antibiotics and a week later he develops a fever at nursery and doctor thinks it’s an upper respiratory infection, no antibiotics but fever gone in two days. I kept him off nursery for a week and he’s been back to normal. Went back to nursery on a Tuesday and last night (Friday) woke with a fever again and a cough and runny nose.

Twice doctors have checked him and noticed his ears look ‘full with fluid’ but not infected. Can this all be related and cause these infections?

I’m obviously phoning the GP on Monday as this is a lot of infections in the space of 5 weeks but maybe I’m missing something?

Any experienced mums got any advice?

I’m so stressed with this.

Thanks

xxx

Sometimes it’s just a virus and you have to ride it out. Lots of bugs around now that masks are off.
But the ears looking full would bother me, and I’d try and see another GP.
Does he eat well/sleep plenty/ get outside to run around ?

Sounds like he has glue ear, which will make him prone to infections and may affect his hearing. I'd ask for a referral to audiology to get him checked. My 5yr old had this between the ages of 1 and 3.5. He'd been getting recurring infections and then it just happened that the GP we saw that time said he had fluid behind his drum and that he needed referring to audiology. The other GPS he'd seen hadn't noticed or weren't bothered. He did have reduced hearing.

Thanks for your reply.

Funny you should say that he had an audiology appointment during all this as nursery were concerned about his hearing as he tended to not to hear when he was called. They said his hearing was fine but they couldn’t get all the information they wanted in his left ear as it could be a bit blocked from a recent cold. He’s to go back in 3 months.

Did they do anything with your son? X

In between all this he seems really well. Full of energy, eats well and sleeps 12 hours, although sometimes ways for a snack at 3am 🤷🏼‍♀️.

He’s even full of beans during all this when he’s had calpol or ibuprofen. My 18 month old doesn’t go to nursery but hasn’t really caught anything off him but when she does their is no fever or anything.

I just read scary stories online regarding constant infections and you think the worst.

No they didn't do anything with him just monitored him as his language acquisition wasn't being affected. If they've had a recent cold they do retest though in case it's that not glue ear causing the congestion. Fingers crossed you DS grows out of all the infections like ours did.
