Possible asthma cough is getting worse

Hi,
So my 2.5 year old has had a cough since he was last Ill in January but seems to have a weakness as whenever he is Ill Ends up with a cough that seems to last forever, mainly at nights time and when he first wakes up. We are currently trialling a brown inhaler twice a day to see if it stops the cough and therefore could be asthma. He has been on the pump for 5 days now and I feel like the cough might be getting worse, coughing more during the day and during his nap. Is it possible the pump is making it worse and it’s not asthma related? Not sure what to do as doctor won’t give us an appointment this late in the day and it’s the weekend. Should we stop the inhaler for now?
Thanks

Takes a few weeks to tell if a steroid inhaler is working, so I wouldn't stop it. Has he also been given a salbutamol (blue) inhaler to take when he's actually got symptoms? (If not, that's what I'd be asking for as well, to see if it helps: great test and treatment in one).

Agree with pp, keep up the brown inhaler and return to GP to ask about a blue reliever salbutamol inhaler. Also insure you are using a spacer.

You also need to determine his triggers. Asthma can be triggered by a chest infection/cold, but also by allergies to things like animal dander, pollen. In the case of coughing at night, or naps....as in in bed it is possible that dust mites are a trigger. So any softies need to be made dust mite free, sheets washed on hot, everything hoovered and dusted at least weekly (keep him out of the room while you clean). Or if he’s sleeping with a cat...it could be the cat.
