Frequent hiccups

Son, 12 y/o, has (sometimes) very frequent hiccups, 2 or 3 times a day. I never ever worried about it until today, when a neighbor said it wasn’t normal and that the GP should check him. I remember having them often when I was a teenager and they always told me it was because I was growing. I honestly never thought that hiccups were a warning sign of anything. Aren’t they normal in kids/teens?
