Talk molars to me

My DS (17 months) has had his top molars breaking through for approx 3 months. Occasionally bother him, been going through a painful patch in the last week so I was hoping they are finally coming through but it's literally a spike that keeps getting bigger. They look like canines. Except he has his canines. He already has his second molars (all his teeth came through in a random order). When his other molars came through all 4 spikes of the tooth appeared quite evenly, but when I feel his gum I can't even feel the rest of the tooth. Just this massive spike. Bit confused. He has a dentist appointment at the end of the month anyway but is it normal for a molar to have such a big spike at the front?

(He also has all his bottom teeth other than back molars and they all came through ok)
