A way to AVOID congestion?

My little boy is 17 months and on and off since he was born he get really congested. He’ll be ok for a week and then for 2 weeks be really congested/snotty and coughs a lot. This time around it’s led to a double ear infection and he’s been miserable and hardly eaten for a week (he’s on antibiotics). I’m not used to this as my first didn’t get anything for the first two years of life! Is there a way to PREVENT rather than cure? We live in an old house and have the heating on most of the time as I’m aware it can get quite cold - so we do make sure it’s heated throughout. Anything else you can suggest? I’m nervous as I know often once they get an ear infection they keep coming back and selfishly I’m not sure I can handle that as I’ve been holding him upright for 4 nights in a row 😅
