Any Occupational Therapists out there?

My 7 year old son has hyper mobile thumb joint and as such, his thumb bends right back when gripping a pencil, like the boy at the top of the picture. This is really affecting his handwriting. I have tried the bobble trick and it works, but as soon as he takes the bobble off, his thumb bends straight back again. How do we transition from using a bobble, to not? I’m thinking about practical terms as in school, he can’t keep having a bobble around his wrist and pencil to help!
Any advice would be great, thanks.
