GP prescribed wrong medication for DD and blamed computer error!

My DD10 suffers a rare health condition. She’s under the care of a consultant who often asks the GP to prescribe meds for my DD. When I collected the latest med I was surprised that it was quite a weak one however I didn’t question the consultant as of course they have been to medical school and I haven’t! Anyway after 4 weeks of this med not helping my DD at all I decided to call the consultant to say that my DD was still suffering and that I didn’t think the meds were working. During the conversation the consultant mentioned the name of the med and said she was surprised it wasn’t working. That’s when I realised I’d been given the wrong med! I went straight to the pharmacist who immediately printed off the prescription from the GP. The GP had prescribed the wrong med!!! I then went straight to the GP surgery and spoke to the practice manager. She spoke to the GP who blamed the computer!! She said it’s a fault with the ordering system on the computer!!! As far as I’m concerned this is bullsh&t! This is not the first mistake my doctors have made. Is this just normal practice or should I change doctors?

That could have had catastrophic consequences. I’d be complaining to anyone who would listen.

You need to write to the practice manager and ask that this is officially investigated. This is just so serious for both your daughter and others. If it was the IT system then that needs sorting out/binning too.

Do you want to name the mixed up drugs as medics might be able to speculate a reason it happened?

If it's dangerous I'd write to the GMC

This happened to my step father last week. He had a chest infection and spoke to the gp on the phone who prescribed antibiotics.
He went to the pharmacy and collected the tablets.
My mum asked what he had been given and when he showed her she thought they looked a bit odd. She googled and it was tablets he'd had before for prostate issues!!!
He went to the pharmacy and they said that's what the dr prescribed. When he went back to the drs they said the gp must have clicked the wrong thing on the computer!!!
Doesn't fill you with confidence does it!!!

Write a formal complaint to the Practice Manager and the GMC. This needs to be investigated

Thanks for your replies. Fortunately their negligence didn’t cause serious harm however it has obviously prolonged her symptoms by not being on the correct med. The med has the same name but a different letter of the alphabet after it. So I believe the GP may have clicked on the wrong one and then not double checked?? I’ve asked the practice manager to formalise her response to my complaint in a letter. Thanks for listening 😊
