DS potential brain bleed - hand hold

DS (8mo) was born healthy and full term. No issues during pregnancy or post birth. At 14 weeks old he caught a viral infection, he deteriorated rapidly and ended up spending a week in PICU on a ventilator. He was in hospital for 2 weeks in total and has made full recovery. However, it’s recently been noticed that he has a bit of weakness in his left side. He doesn’t roll left or try to pick up toys/finger food with his left hand. He also doesn’t put his left foot fully on the floor when he’s in the jumperoo. He has only just begun sitting unaided and is nowhere near pulling himself to a sitting position, crawling or standing.

The doctors think he may have suffered a bleed on his brain during his time in PICU. I feel devastated by this but we won’t know for sure until he has an MRI scan. He starts physio immediately. Has anyone experienced similar or got any words of comfort at all? I feel so afraid DS will have cerebral palsy or lifelong physical limitations. Thank you x

I'm sorry, such a worry for you. I have no experience of this but didn't want to read and run. Thanks
Hopefully someone with more knowledge will be along soon.

I don’t have any experience but just take one step at a time and don’t Google. When is his scan?

Just a reminder if the obvious - he is the same beautiful boy today that he was before you were told about the possible bleed. Knowing a label is sort of helpful but won’t change him as a baby / child. What it may do is help him access help to live his best life.

Hello

I have a DD with mild cerebral palsy. I know CP sounds terrifying, but it is a huge spectrum and at the very mild end you would hardly know unless looking closely.

I am not an expert of course, but if your DS is sitting up at 8 months (so not too long after the average age) it seems likely that he would be at the mild end even if he does turn out to have CP. And of course it may turn out he does not and this may be a temporary virus after effect.

The best thing you can do, whether it is CP or not, is encourage him to use those muscles. The physio will have plenty of suggestions. This can make a really big difference so it’s great you are seeing a physio soon.

Best wishes

My almost 2 year old has hydrocephalus and has had 2 brain bleeds. He has cerebral palsy affecting his right hand side. Also epilepsy and some other issues. Yes there are times when i want to cry and scream that it isnt fair but honestly they learn to adapt so well and are wee fighters. Ben cant walk yet but he he can sit up and is starting to crawl and pull himself to standing. Hes sees physio and occupational therapist etc. We are getting a walking frame in the next few weeks. If you ever need to talk or rant or ask anything feel free to msg me.
