Conjunctivitis

Hi all, looking for some advice. My 3 year old DC has recently started back at pre-school and she seems to be getting sick all the time, which I fully expected and it's good for her immune system. However, this latest cold has caused some symptoms of conjunctivitis in both eyes. There is no pink eye as I managed to get my hands on the antiobiotic ointment quickly as I caught it early. However, she has the yellow discharge from both eyes and general itchiness/discomfort. She woke up this morning and her eyes were basically glued shut from the discharge. I felt awful and it took about 10 minutes for her eyes to open properly with the help of the ointment. Is there anything else I can do when this happens the next time she goes to sleep and wakes up? Aside from applying the ointment straight away, is there anything else anyone can advise please? TIA

When she wakes up clean them with cotton wool and warm water.

Thank you, I will make sure that I do this next time.

Yup keep rinsing with water. And sounds obvious but a clean piece of cotton wool for each eye.

Very obvious, feeling a bit silly that I didn't figure this out for myself before making this thread. Thank you both

I hope her eyes are better soon. If I’m unsure on something I google whatever the illness is and NHS, they often have a really good website page on it.

Thank you Thanks yes, I did Google it but it didn't say anything about the eyelids sticking together or what to do when that happens but pp's suggestion is kind of common sense now that I think about it. The yellow discharge seems to have gone now and it's not so red and sore on the eyelids. Only thing is she fights me like hell when trying to put the ointment in. Bless her. I think she will be ok though. Thanks again Smile

Hi OP, my son first got conjunctivitis when he was a very small baby, took him to drs who gave something but said boiled salt water cooled works really well too. He got conjunctivitis a few times over the years and using the salt water clears it up. Hope this helps.
