Removal of tonsils and adenoids

We’ve been told today that my two year old is going to need her tonsils and adenoids out in the next few weeks as they are absolutely massive, and causing her issues with her breathing at night.
I’m already an anxious wreck about it, even though I know it’s what she needs.
I would be really grateful for any stories of children having a tonsil/adenoidectomy, what to expect and any tips that would help us make it as comfortable as possible for her.
Thank you.

Well it was a long time ago since my DD had hers removed (30 years) but the difference it made was amazing. She started to eat and sleep better, she had a growth spurt and didn’t miss lots of school. She was 5 when they were taken out and the morning after the op she was stood by her bed waiting for the doctor to come and tell her she could go home. We bought her a present for when she woke up from the op which she was excited about. I gave her calpol and kept her bed propped up at the head end for a week or two after. Lots of favourite tv programmes, ice cream, lollies, jelly etc. It was so worth it. It’s harder to prepare a 2 year old as there’s not the awareness and understanding that a 5 year old has. DD knew why she needed the OP and that it would stop the awful tonsillitis she kept getting.

There’s an Usborne first experiences book called Going To the Hospital and a Peppa goes to the hospital book that might familiarise him a little before he goes in. The staff will be used to knowing the right things to do and say to help make the whole thing as easy as possible for you both. I was as scared as anything but so glad when it was done.
