5 year old hair smell

My daughters hair really smells even after 1 day. I'm really unsure how other than she has a bad thumb sucking habit which I'm wondering whether this dried saliva might be getting on her hair. Does anyone else have experience of this? It's a sickly stagnant smell and other than daily washing, I don't know what to do.

Is it very recent? We just had this with our son the past couple of days, and it turned out to be an infected sore on his scalp. He has a lot of hair so it wasn't obvious without digging around.

@ludocris I haven't really noticed it that much but might have been a few months now. The doctor has said this shampoo Capasal might be an option.
