Constant cough in 2 year old

My DD (age 2) has a constant cough which is really concerning me.

I took her to the GP at about 12 months due to her coughing frequently, they reassured me it was normal which I was happy with at the time as it was only mild.

Since then the cough has got worse, I can't remember the last time she didn't have a cough and it happens frequently throughout the day. She has had a series of colds since September but the cough has been constant. I have noticed the cough gets worse:

-In the cold
-When she is being active
-At night
-If something is burnt when cooking

These situations can set off coughing fits that at times are bad enough to make her gag/vomit or keep her awake at night.
Throughout the day even without these triggers she coughs periodically, although not as extreme.

Obviously my first thought was asthma, I took her to the GP who prescribed a blue inhaler to see if it helped and asked me to return to review in a month.

The inhaler seems to sometimes help and other times doesn't, I would have thought with asthma it would help every time?

Unfortunately we've had Covid (thankfully DD has been asymptomatic) which has delayed the inhaler review by 2 weeks. I am finally able to take her this week coming but in the meantime wondered if anyone had a similar experience and if so what was the outcome?

My little one would cough at night and when running outside in the cold, a brown preventer inhaler at night and in the morning sorted it out.

My dd was the same - asthma etc all ruled out. Got to the point we were so used to it, it became normal! She grew out of it.
