Pain in chest

My 9 year old son has been complaining of heart palpitations for about 3 months. Took him to the GP who said anxiety. See how he gets on. Since then he has been getting a sharp shooting pain numerous times throughout the day. It comes and goes and always makes him cry. Yesterday he had the pain throughout the day again but this time his heart was racing. It was going as high as 158bpm. He suddenly became very scared and was sick. I called 111 who said a doctor would call me back. The GP called and said he would write to his doctor to arrange an ecg however if his heart rate goes above 120 take him to hospital. His heart rate that day was all over the place and he was exhausted. Took him to A&E who said they could find nothing wrong after doing an ecg trace for no more than 60 seconds. Follow up with the GP. Today he has been getting the same sharp pain causing him to cry in pain. This comes even when resting. Surely this needs to be investigated? I'm worried. Anyone had anything like this?

Nothing helpful to add but hopefully bumping and someone can offer some advice. Hope your boy is more settled now. You are in the best place now to get him help.

My DD had something called precordial catch syndrome. Sudden sharp pains in the chest area, probably a similar age to your DS. The hospital was very good , checked her out thoroughly and diagnosed this syndrome which put our mind's at rest. The Dr said she'd grown out of it which she has. Is it possible the pain is causing the anxiety, racing heart etc? Regardless I hope the GP is more helpful for you.

We did question this but they said it wouldn't cause the racing heart. His resting heart rate whilst sleeping is 118 so on the top end of normal. As soon as he stands up or walks or even when he is watching tv it will start racing sometimes with pain sometimes without. You can feel it pounding in his chest. He is too scared to sleep by himself now too. Hope your DD is okay xx

No that does sound different and must be very scary for him. Keep pushing for answers and tests. Do you have any health insurance with work, might be worth checking that out if you do. Hope it gets sorted very soon.

@alwayssomething1 just wondering how your son is getting on now? I hope it has settled down?

Have you considered postural tachycardia syndrome? I had symptoms start around age 9

Hi we are awaiting a 24 hour ecg. He is still getting the pains and afterwards becomes very sleepy or sick. The paediatrician we saw has said there is a long wait at the loner but will push him on to the urgent list. Xx

You need to push for a 24 hour ECG & a follow up with the cardiac appointment
