Hi after some advice really , my 9 year old was ill over half term with a cough and cold and has now been of school a week . Negative pcr and lateral flow tests , for the past few days she has had an awful almost constant barking coughing , non productive no flem I can see . I obviously can’t send her back to school , should I be calling 111 or just waiting till Monday for gp . I feel awful she can hardly talk without coughing .

Is she vaccinated against whooping cough?

Mondui · 06/11/2021 18:58

I am joining as my DD struggle with coughing as well.

I would call 111. My 9yo had similar and needed antibiotics and an inhaler over half term, she had bronchitis.

@ beonthemathside awful isn’t it !

@ FlyingFlamingo I did an online form with them and they dismissed it saying not urgent . I think I will call them did they arrange an out of hours appointment?

My 970 dd has had a barking cough this last week but hers is easing. She use to always get terrible croup where she would sound like a seal. I think you should definitely push to get her checked.

AliceMcK · 06/11/2021 19:35

That was supposed to say 9yo

DGD literally coughed non-stop for three months, until a duty dr listened to a recording and said it was whooping cough.
She was vaccinated but it hadn’t worked in her case.
With the correct antibiotics she recovered in a few days.

Thanks all I have spoke to a nurse practitioner in our local weekend walk in site - use to be walk in but now virtual , he assessed the sound of the cough , her breathing sounds and look of her and decided as it’s been 2 weeks she warrants antibiotics, we managed to get them before the chemist closed so she has had the first dose . he has also booked an out of hours appointment tomorrow for her to be seen and checked over . He said if she seems worse before then to go to A and E . Sadly her brother who is 6 has been in hospital a couple of times due to viral induced wheeze , so I know the signs . I am worried school will question her time of she has been of a week and I feel she is still not fit to go back yet !

Yes mine too ! She's 9 started with a cold about six weeks ago and the cough just isn't budging. She's only just starting to sleep ok at night again after it's been keeping her awake. But she still has the horrible cough during the day. She is undergoing tests for asthma.
