Ultrasound for uti

My dd had a suspected urine infection last week and the gp tested a sample and said she didn't think it was an infection but she would send off to the hospital anyway. I've just received a call from the GP to advise that she does have an infection and needs antibiotics. They also want her to have an ultrasound as she has had one or two in the past. Health anxiety has shot through the roof thinking all sorts !! And also why was it not detected by the gp when she tested the urine ??!

Hi there.

My daughter is 6, she had two water infections around age of 3/4 then none until one this year. She told me Thursday evening it hurt to wee so I was due to ring doctors Friday by Friday she was vomiting and so poorly it had gone to her kidney, I suffer majorly with health anxiety we was in hospital for a couple days and they also did an ultrasound on her, guessing to check her kidney which was enlarged and to check bladder to see maybe if there’s a reason for her infection as she had two in the past.

She’s been fine since and didn’t do an ultrasound. Again I asked about the kidney they said it be enlarged cos she had a kidney infection. I think ultrasound is normal to check bladder xx

@Loobylou1987 thanks for your response !! I've calmed down and realized it's probably to check the bladder and kidneys are functioning properly.

Yes I think it’s normal. I panicked when they said they were doing an ultrasound I had swapped with dad at hospital at the time and he rang me to say she was going for ultrasound and I panicked! They checked her chest abdomen and her pelvic area and all appeared normal. Hope your little girl feels better.

It's totally normal op, it's protocol for kids who've had UTI's to check the kidneys and for any scarring.
My DS had a ultrasound scan and got the dye test in couple of month.

Depends on the age of the child and the bug grown in the urine.
Urine dips can be negative in small babies as they don't concentrate their wee. It should always be sent to the lab in babies. Taking a few days to get the diagnosis can be normal.
Some ages get automatic scans, some bacteria get automatic scans. There is some very good guidelines from NICE saying when to do what investigation.
