Sorry not a pleasant subject but my 9 year old has been having very dark poos lately almost black. My health anxiety has gone through the roof thinking the worst. Is this normal ?!

Does she eat lots of iron rich foods? Get an appointment and get her checked out by the GP. She could have an upper GI issue.

Her diet is awful she has ASD and feeding her is a nightmare as she is so fussy!

Given your comment about her diet, are you giving her a multivitamin containing iron? Iron supplements can cause this.

Mischance · 23/10/2021 11:35

It is usually either "old blood" from somewhere in the gut; or more likely in a young person iron. Definitely worth talking to GP.

But also what is she eating? my health anxiety was out of control until I linked the red velvet cake ( I ate far too often) to the change in colour.

(I'm a GP). Don't panic - there are lots of reasons this can happen, and most of them are nothing serious in her age group. However, do talk to your GP next week.

Has she been eating different things that could make it black?
Iron tablets cause black poo
If none of these them do speak to GP, it's likely nothing to worry about but definitely ask
