Bites on dd

Could anyone tell me what these bites look like on DD's ankle?

Ankle location and google images would suggest flea bites. We do have a dog but I'm not convinced. Dog is 5 and never had fleas but we do regularly check her for them and de flea her, wash dog bed weekly etc.

Surely if it was fleas, we'd all be bitten as our dog likes to sit on us all.

I remember growing up I lived in a house with multiple cats and dogs and I was really prone to flea bites. I would imagine if this was fleas I would have been bitten by now!

Plus I've never actually seen a single flea on the dog or in my house!

She also had some further up her leg!

Bless her. Have you given some antihistamines in case they itch?

Yes she has had some. She's also poorly atm with a cough (covid negative).

It's definitely bites. I just can't figure out what!

I can't help with that, I'm just seeing heat spots. They look itchy though.

gamerchick · 19/10/2021 20:11

They might not be dog fleas, you can pick fleas up easily. I had one coming home from work with me once. I got a house infestation of cat fleas from a bag of donated clothes a few years ago. That was fun.

Bed bugs bite in clusters of three and normally choose one person to bite. Have you picked up any second hand furniture or clothes recently? It happened to us once and now anything from the charity shop or eBay goes straight in the freezer for 10 days

Do you use flea stuff (for want of a better word!) to prevent fleas, so monthly/6 weekly? I think you need to treat the dog and spray the house, I think flea spray kills other bugs too.

Yes we do! I've never actually seen any signs of fleas on our dog but we do regularly check and de-flea the dog.. I don't regularly spray the house as never felt the need to as never her and issue...

she recalls being felt like she was bitten last week at school when she put her wellies on that are stored outside on a rack but I feel we would have noticed them before today if it was that...

Maybe give the spray a go, worth a try!

Lotusmonster · 19/10/2021 22:15

I’d say fleas

We've just had a does flea infestation. Not seen any on the cat but ds1 and I started getting bites around our ankles, nobody else in the house did. Then I started getting them on other places but ds1 didn't. Eventually ds2 saw a flea hop across the dining room table. Flea bombed the house and all been OK. One armchair (old, horsehair stuffing) needed a second treatment but since then no more bites.

Anyway, all that to say that just because not everybody is getting bites doesn't mean it isn't fleas. It is prime time for them as we all turn heating on and make our homes all cosy for them.

Artie30 · 20/10/2021 06:35

Thank you all. I've used flea treatment and will buy some home flea stuff. I'm always vacuuming and cleaning anyway so even if the dog did have them I'm hoping it won't be a major issue... 😒

@Artie30 Just wondering how you're getting on? Any more bites?
