My dd 9 has got another bloody cold just after getting over the last one !! She says no one else in her class has one so not sure why she keeps getting them. She has ASD and is a terrible patient so I always dread them as she can't cope with the blocked nose and snotty nose especially at night. Anyone else child the same, what can I give her apart from calpol?

It sounds really hard. I am not sure what advice to give which you already don’t know… My DD just came down with a bold (we think) as well, 103.5 F, cough and a sore throat. But of a blocked nose. Her siblings has this last week, PCR showed no Covid.

I usually don’t give calpol unless the temperature is above 101/102. I find that having a bit of a temperature makes them rest more and I do believe that it is the body’s way to get rid of illness. Above 102 I give Calpol and when it is up around 104F I alternate Calpol and Neurofen. DD has got fever convulsions in the past when the temperature reached 104.5 quickly and I am keen to avoid that.

Apart from that… lots of fluids. I went to get Coca Cola and Fanta this morning (usually I don’t allow that). Any fruit I can get into her. I have bought satsumas and strawberries. Yoghurt usually works as well. And chicken soup. I believe in maximum amount of fluids and as much vitamins I can get down.

Other than Calpol/Neurofen, I don’t give any medication apart from strepsils. (Diflam spray on the advice of a doctor once and obviously any antibiotics etc as advices by GP).

For sleeping, I usually sleep with her as it is easier to prop her up on pillows (eases the blocked nose) and keep her there during the night.

I was once recommended some vicks rub (I think) to make breathing easier during a cold. You might want to look at that?

Sending you lots of positive thoughts. It will be ok. I am home with DD today so do ask if there is anything. As I said, I don’t think there is anything you don’t already know though Smile
