Newborn eye infection?

Hi all,
My DS is 1 week old and for a few days one of his eyes has been producing yellow/ green gunk every 30mins / 1 hour. When he wakes overnight his eyelids are stuck together.
Told the midwife and she said it's normal but hasn't even looked at his eye. She advised to use breast milk to clean it but it's not working.
Could it be an eye infection? Just a little concerned as my older DC goes to nursery and am wondering if he's brought back a virus

So my LO had that. If their eye is red or theere is swelling its likely an infection. From what you describe its sticky eye which is very common -i used freshly cooled boiled water to clean and it did come back every hour but I think it only lasted a week - so I wouldnt worry!if any other signs Id get them seen by a gp

Ooh we had this - maybe blocked tear ducts?. Think you might need to try rubbing cotton buds dipped in cooled boiled salt water maybe in corner of eye? Or something similar....it's been a few years.
If it's persistent you need to do more than squirt breast milk at them 😁

Sticky eye, it's normal. Just needs bathing and it will clear up.

Have you watched the NHS video is this sticky eye or conjunctivitis? Sticky eye clears up with breast milk but it took my baby a week to clear it once j started using my milk on it on cotton wool.

I done the exact same and cleared within a week. I didn't know it was a thing either op at the time but very common

Thank you everyone. Have started using cooled boiled water to wipe it away. Hopefully it goes away soon. X

My DS had this and it took nearly 6 weeks to clear despite regular cleaning. We did get it checked and GP said it was just sticky eye and due to under developed tear ducts. When he started producing tears around week 6, it magically went over night. GP also said it is very rare for babies to have true eye infections.

My son had blocked tear ducts and had this until nearly one year old.
