Cough and cold in child won't go

My daughter 9 has had a snotty nose and cough for nearly ten days. The snotty nose has gone but she is left with a barking cough. Is this a virus going round ? No loss of taste or smell or temperature.

I presume you've had her pcr tested for covid? Not everyone gets a temperature or loss of smell and taste. It's common for it to be like a bad cold and cough in children.

Needingsupportplease · 26/09/2021 14:22

My 2 year old is the same, negative pcr were on day 14 just an awful cough left now which is worse at night!

whatswithtodaytoday · 26/09/2021 14:24

My 2 year old has something like this, PCR negative but we're on day 11 of the cough I think, and now I've got it too. There are so many viruses around at the moment, almost everyone I know with young children has someone ill in the house.

Zoeloulou · 29/09/2021 00:44

Me and my daughters have had this. After 2 weeks We are still suffering. The cough doesn’t seem to want to go. Seems like we are ill every few weeks all of a sudden

lollipoprainbow · 29/09/2021 03:42

The cough is worse at night and keeping her awake, have you tried any cough medicines ? Just wondered what I can do her to help her if anything !

There's heaps of viruses going around just now! It's brutal. Do you have a humidifier? That's on just now in my wee ones room along with the calpol plug in.

PurpleEchoLamp · 29/09/2021 04:31

Us too, cough cough cough! Not covid. Ds has just started yr10 and has missed a week already, but still isn't really well enough for school. He's determined to go in though. Other Ds is barking, no other symptoms, must be driving his teachers mad. It's rubbish!

lollipoprainbow · 29/09/2021 06:27

I'm scared because her breathing sounds wheezy she's 9.

Get her checked at doctors. Wheezy, cough. Move a bit faster, shes only 9. She may need antibiotics

RockAndRollBaby · 29/09/2021 06:46

My DS is on week 3 and antibiotics. Started with a snotty nose and then about a week later a barking cough. He had a negative test but a rattle on the chest so spoke with Dr who said chest infection and gave us antibiotics. Still not shifting it really though.

whatswithtodaytoday · 29/09/2021 06:53

If she's wheezy take her to the GP, she probably needs antibiotics to shift it. I commented upthread ... my son's fine now other than a good cough in the morning, but I'm on antibiotics as it was such an awful cough and I was feeling tight chested and breathless. Am half convinced it's Covid but it's not showing up on tests, it was very Covid-y!

Anyway, after two days of antibiotics I'm so much better.

lollipoprainbow · 29/09/2021 07:00

Thanks all ! I tried calling the GP last week but was in a queue of 52 people !! I'll try and call again today.

Has she done a covid test?

arield · 29/09/2021 07:22

We've all had this. Negative PCRs but still got horrible stuffy noses and mild coughs. Getting on for over a week now

Yubaba · 29/09/2021 07:42

It’s going round our house too, DD has missed a week of school already and is now on antibiotics and I started yesterday and my throat feels like it’s on fire.

Needingsupportplease · 29/09/2021 15:06

Hope your DD is ok. Mine is still no better so were at drs today. If anything its getting worse!

lollipoprainbow · 04/10/2021 15:30

She's stilll got the cough !! Went to the gp today and they said to ride it out. I haven't got it if it is a virus which makes me think there's more to it but then I am a very health anxious person !!

Hope she's ok. No change here either! Antibiotics not touching it!

Karleeb30 · 05/10/2021 13:42

How is she now op? Ds had a cold like this quite a while ago now. Took 10 days to shift, got him a covid test which was negative. I can only assume it's been so long since he was ill that it affected him pretty badly.

Coughs can linger for weeks too. If DS has a cold he'll be coughing after exertion or in the mornings for weeks after.

m030978 · 05/10/2021 13:59

Same here, DS (13) has had it for about 2 weeks now, I've had it 10 days. I'm not coughing now, but am still exhausted. DS is still coughing but thankfully has an inhaler which is helping (he's asthmatic anyway).
Both of us have been consistently negative on lateral flow and PCR.

lollipoprainbow · 05/10/2021 14:31

She didn't cough as much last night but has woken up a bit snotty again ! It's been about three weeks Now. It's driving me and her mad as we aren't getting any sleep at night due to the coughing.
