Diarrhea and a cold - what to feed LO

LO has just started preschool, not been to nursery before so I expected she'd pick a lot of bugs up. Last weekend she was sick just once but off for 2 days where she was fine just very tired. Back in Wed and then has been having very loose stools since Thursday. Once a day apart from today when she's been twice. Her tummy hurts before it happens. She's also full of a cold which came on last night. Does this sound like a tummy bug or something else? What's the best thing to be giving her? We're trying to keep her fluids up and have got some dioralyte. TIA

I'd give her whatever she wants if I'm honest.

I would ask her what she wants - my sick kids always ask for smoothies, strawberries, oranges and dry toast. I now know the deal.

I offer a cup of water every 1-2 hours for hydration.

Hope your little one feels better soon.

I always keep baby meal pouches in for when little one is ill. I serve them with bits of bread (bit like dipping with soup), it stops the gaging when they’ve got a sore throat and just gives them those additional calories.

I’d give her whatever she wants but white toast and bananas are always good for a dodgy tummy

The general advise with diarrhea is to avoid dairy, oily, fried and spicy foods. Some say yoghurt, yakult, kefir etc can have good bacteria though which is beneficial.

Bananas provide potassium and help firm stools. Keeping fluids up is the most important. Regular, small sips are better than large amounts in 1 go. Very dilute squash, dioralyte ice lollies, weak jelly. Generally it will clear within 48hrs.
