Child fever night three

My ds is 17 months old
He has had a temperature for the past three nights, and the past two days has been sad and clingy. I've alternated nurofen and calpol which has kept his temperature down in the day but not at night.
I can't work out where he is hurting - toilet seems normal, throat doesn't sound sore, but hands are in his mouth a lot so I know he has teeth coming but I didn't think that gives a temperature.

Every night I think he'll turn a corner and every night I wake up next to a little radiator 😞 would m you call 111?

My 2 often had fever whilst teething, but apparently it's not related. Is he dribbling a lot?

It's so tough at that age

When my DS had a fever at that age my GP made me take all his clothes off and we sat in the waiting room in his nappies till he cooled off.

Teething can cause a fever and paracetamol, calpol, can help reduce it.

You can alternate calpol and ibuprofen every 2 hours. Obviously stay within the max amount for each item. They are different medications so you still have 4 hours between each respective one

No harm in calling 111 for advice. How high is the fever? Low grade for three days isn’t too worrisome as long as you’re keeping up with fluids, but high grade you might want to get him seen in person for peace of mind.

One possibility: given the age of your DC, higher fever at night, clinginess, but no apparent other symptoms - could be roseola. It’s hard to diagnose at just the fever stage, but then a tell-tale rash appears when the fever breaks after a few days. Both my DCs had it around 18-24 months and it was quite stressful until we figured out what was going on. No one likes 3+ days of fever.

I hope all is well soon!

And call 111 any time you want to talk it through if you're worried.

Susannahmoody · 24/08/2021 02:31

What's his actual temperature?

Susannahmoody · 24/08/2021 02:32

Could also be hand foot and mouth. Does he go to nursery

winteroversummer · 24/08/2021 02:34

He doesn't go to nursery, no. We are at my parents house Visiting for a few days, I don't have a thermometer here to take exact readings, but he feels cooler after medicine and is drinking plenty of water and breast milk

Thanks for replying
It is nice to have another person in the middle of the night to talk to about it!
