Plaque on toddler teeth

I feel like an absolute failure. I have done my best to brush my twin toddlers teeth as best I can but I have just discovered plaque on the back of one of my twins two bottom teeth. They are 18 months and almost have all their teeth and we have literally tried everything to try and make teeth brushing less dramatic for them but nothing works and I have to hold them down to do it.

Has anyone been to the dentist with their little ones recently and also discovered plaque? What did the dentist say? Is this a big deal?

Feeling like I’ve let my children down.

Take to the dentist, they may be able to clean it off and do a flouride treatment, which will help prevent further decay.

You haven't let your child down, mum guilt is a real thing.

I have to fight for teeth brushing too! I'm sure other people have the same. Just keep trying and emphasise that this is our morning/ bedtime routine. Don't force it just encourage, that's all you can do.

My DC seem to get plaque/tartar despite thorough brushing. I think it’s because Dc1 produces a lot of saliva (due to a medical condition) and DC2 is a mouth breather. Dentist has not been judgmental or mean about it at all.

The thing that’s made the most difference is switching to an oral b junior electric toothbrush but guess yours may be a bit too little for that.

On the plus side you are just about at the age where they stop fighting the brushing so much.

I feel the exact same my little one is 2 and is on the spectrum I've noticed plaque on his despite brushing twice he screams and cry's nothing seems to work and he's never been seen by the dentist due to Covid :(
